Bulls Continue MAC Play With A Pair of Big Games

BUFFALO, NY - As the regular season winds down and the standings tighten, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (11-1-3, 5-0-3 MAC) continues Mid-American Conference play this week with a pair of big games. The Bulls host Central Michigan on Thursday, October 20 at 7pm in the regular season home finale before traveling to Muncie, IN for a clash with the Ball State Cardinals on Sunday at 1pm.
Buffalo went 1-0-1 over the weekend as the Bulls picked up a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois on Thursday before playing to a scoreless draw at Bowling Green on Sunday. Freshman Marissa Foster scored the game-winning goal, the first of her UB career, to power the Bulls to victory over the Huskies.
On Thursday, it will be the 29th meeting between Buffalo and Central Michigan with the Chippewas holding a 13-8-7 series advantage. The Bulls won both meetings a season ago, including a 2-1 double overtime thriller in the MAC Tournament quarterfinals.
On Sunday, Buffalo and Ball State will meet for the 23rd time with the Cardinals owning a narrow 11-9-2 series edge. The Bulls defeated the Cardinals 2-1 at UB Stadium last season.
The Bulls have showed balance all season long as they have scored 27 goals off the feet of 10 different players led by sophomore Arianna Zumpano who has recorded seven goals and an assist while fellow sophomore Jasmine Guerber has scored six goals while adding two assists. Buffalo leads the nation and the MAC in goals against average (.333) while also leading the league in total points (92), total assists (38), assists per game (2.53), shots on goal per game (7.13) and shutout percentage (.733). They rank third in total goals (27) and scoring offense (1.80). Zumpano ranks fourth in the league in total goals (7) and fifth in total points (15) while Guerber is the MAC-leader in game-winning goals (4) and ranks fifth in total goals (6).
Defensively, fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly leads the conference and ranks in the top five in the nation in shoutouts (10), goals against average (0.336) and save percentage (.900) while freshman Ellie Simmons ranks third in the MAC in total assists (6) and fourth in assists per game (0.40).
Central Michigan enters Thursday's match with a 2-9-4 overall record and a 1-4-3 league mark after playing to a 2-2 at Akron on Sunday. The Chippewas are led offensively by junior midfielder Megan Logue who has scored three goals while three other CMU players have scored a pair of goals on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Emma Shingler leads Central Michigan between the pipes, compiling a 1-7-4 overall record with 71 saves, a .717 save percentage and a 2.27 goals against average in 12 games.
Ball State is 6-4-5 overall and 5-1-2 in league play after a 2-1 win at Ohio on Sunday. Senior midfielder Chelcy Ralph and freshman forward Lexi Fraley lead the Cardinals with four goals each. The Cardinals are balanced offensively as nine other players have recorded a goal on the season. In net, Ball State is led by senior Alex DeRuvo who is 6-9-2 overall with 64 saves, a 0.711 save percentage and a 1.52 goals against average in 16 starts.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will travel to Kent State for an afternoon matinee to close out regular season play. Kickoff from Dix Stadium is set for 3pm.
