BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (12-1-3, 6-0-3 MAC) clinched a spot in the 2022 Mid-American Conference Tournament with a gutsy 2-1 win over Central Michigan in brutal conditions at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
With the win, the Bulls extended their unbeaten streak to 13 games, which is the second-longest in program history, trailing only the 2014 (14) squad. UB sits in first place in the MAC standings with two games to go in the regular season.
The Chippewas struck first as Elizabeth Chylstun used the wind on a ball into the box to the head of Matilda Melin who flicked it into the back of the net to give CMU a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls maintained composure and answered in the 19th minute as Arianna Zumpano drew a foul in the box and Ellie Simmons converted on the ensuing penalty kick for a goal to tie the game at one.
Buffalo continued to attack in the 24th minute as Leah Wengender played a ball to Zumpano who got a head on it, but Emma Shingler made the save. UB then had two great looks late in the half off the foot of Jasmine Guerber as she got the ball in the box in the 40th minute and ripped a shot on net but the Shingler made a fantastic save. A couple minutes later the sophomore made another great run and drilled a shot on net, but the Chippewa defense knocked it out of play and the game remained tied at the half.
The Bulls stayed aggressive to start the second half as Simmons took a free kick in the 51st minute and drilled a ball on net but Shingler made a diving save to knock it out of play. Later, Wengender had a pair of good looks, one off the crossbar, and then Copley found Guerber in the middle of the box, and she drilled a ball on net, but Shingler made a fantastic point blank save.
The persistence paid off in the 68th minute as Guerber found Copley who played a great ball into the box to the foot of Katie Krohn and the freshman fired a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead.
Krohn continued to attack later in the half as she had two more scoring opportunities in the 74th and 79th minutes but the first sailed just high and Shingler made yet another tough save on the later to knock the ball out of play. The Bulls were then able to maintain possession in the final minutes to preserve the victory.
The Bulls were dominant offensively as they outshot the Chippewas 21-6, including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal, and held a 5-3 edge in corner kick opportunities. Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly made three saves on the night while Shingler made nine stops for Central Michigan. Simmons was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her impact on both sides of the ball in the win.
"Really tough conditions tonight, almost like facing two opponents," said head coach Shawn Burke. "But their response to come right back and answer with a goal, we haven't scored a goal in the first half in quite some time, so it was great to see that. And then really pleased with a dominant second half performance. It was gut check time at halftime with the importance of this result and I think we showed that dominance to close it out."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Ball State for a big matchup with the Cardinals who currently sit in second place.
