STORRS, CT – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team closed out non-conference play on a high note as the Bulls went on the road and defeated UConn, 2-0. The victory was Buffalo's sixth straight as UB enters conference play with a 6-1-0 record.
The Bulls got on the board in the sixth minute as Marcy Barberic scored her seventh goal through seven games this year. Senior Gianna Yurchak won the header on a UConn free kick and got the ball quickly to Katherine Camper who then found Barberic as she got past the backline and from there it was an easy finish for the reigning MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
Buffalo held on to the 1-0 advantage through the half and into the 72nd minute when it got a much needed insurance goal. Senior Hannah Callaghan scored her second goal of the season as she buried the shot in the top center of the goal, and for the second time it was a familiar teammate that assisted it her way as her sister Abbey Callaghan found her for the scoring opportunity.
Emily Kelly made four stops in the win, three of those coming in the first half when the game was still very much in doubt. Midway through the first half, she made two stops in just under a two minute period and the Bulls got one more big stop as she blocked a shot on goal off a UConn corner kick in the 27th minute.
"What a great way to wrap up non-conference against a quality BIG EAST opponent," said head coach Shawn Burke. "To come on the road and showcase who we are is such a boost heading into MAC play. Collectively, from the staff to each player, this was a total team effort and a well-deserved result."
The Bulls open up Mid-American Conference play on Thursday at Ohio. Kick off is set for 4pm.
