BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (1-1-0) travels to New Haven, CT for a showdown against the Yale Bulldogs on Friday afternoon. It will be the first meeting between the two schools.
The Bulls are coming off a dominating performance on Sunday where UB defeated Niagara 6-2 for its first win of the season. The six team goals scored by Buffalo are the most scored in a game in nearly 20 years, as UB last matched that total in a 6-1 win over Akron on September 18, 2001, also at UB Stadium.
It was a balanced offensive attack as five different Bulls found the scoresheet. Reining MAC Offensive Player of the Year Marcy Barberic got Buffalo on the board in the 16th minute on a penalty kick. The Bulls added to their lead two minutes later as Abbey Callaghan took the free kick and played a perfect ball into the top right corner of the net from 35 yards out to put UB up 2-0. Buffalo would add a pair of goals less than two minutes apart as freshman Arianna Zumpano scored her first career goal and Katherine Camper followed with a goal of her own. Barberic added her second goal of the night early in the second half and Leah Wengender added a goal off a corner kick to stop the Purple Eagles rally and secure the victory.
Yale enters Friday's match having not played a game since the fall of 2019, where the Bulldogs had their most successful season in 14 years, winning 11 games. Yale was picked to finish fourth in the 2021 preseason Ivy League poll. The Bulldogs lost their top two scorers from their most recent campaign but return nine starters under first-year head coach Sarah Martinez.
Next up, the Bulls travel to the Southern Tier for a clash with the Binghamton Bearcats on Sunday, September 5th at 7pm.
