BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-7-3, 5-4-2 MAC) defeated Akron 2-1 in double overtime on a goal by Taylor Caridi in the 109th minute in their quarterfinal matchup on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium. With the win, the Bulls advance to the MAC Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2015.
Buffalo would have their first look of the game in the ninth minute as Katherine Camper fed the ball through to Kaitlyn Walsh whose shot sailed just high.
The Bulls would have another scoring chance in the 16th minute as Walsh and Marcy Barberic ripped a pair of shots on net but Zips goalkeeper Libby Harper stood tall to make two great saves.
UB's best chance of the half came in the 38th minute as Leah Wengender broke free and drilled a ball at the top corner of the net but Harper made a leaping save to tip the ball off the crossbar and out of play.
The Bulls defense held strong as the UB backline allowed just one Akron shot in the opening 45 minutes.
Buffalo would continue to stay aggressive to start the second half as Walsh drilled a ball on net in the 48th minute but Harper made another fantastic save to knock the ball out of play. Later, in the 80th minute, Barberic got a great look on goal from inside the box but her shot sailed just high and out of play.
The Bulls would finally break through in the 84th minute as Adrianna VanCuyck took the corner and played a perfect ball into the box that found the head of Walsh who flicked it past Harper to put UB up 1-0.
The Zips would answer less than a minute later as Ryley Watt played the ball through to Hailey Clere and she flicked it to Abigail Brown who converted the equalizer to send the game to overtime.
Buffalo had a great chance in the first overtime period as Wengender played a great ball through to Barberic but the junior couldn't convert as her shot slid wide left and the game moved to a second overtime.
The Zips had a great look in the 106th minute as Bailee Bowers ripped a ball on net but Emily Kelly made a phenomenal diving save to knock the ball out of play and keep the game knotted at one.
And that save would prove to be pivotal as the Bulls scored the game-winning goal on their next possession in the 109th minute as VanCuyck found Caridi who headed the ball into the back of the net to secure the victory.
Buffalo outshot Akron 21-6 on the afternoon, including a 9-5 edge in shots on goal and an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Freshman Jennifer Mandarano and sophomore Tess Ford were named Co-Players of the match by the UB coaching staff for their efforts in the quarterfinal victory.
In net, Kelly made four saves for UB, while Harper made seven stops for Akron.
"I think this game was kind of a microcosm for the entire season," said head coach Shawn Burke. "All the ups and downs and the ebbs and flows, but what showed the most was their resiliency. We created chances and when push came to shove we got the result. I'm pleased for the girls and I think they got rewarded for their work."
The Bulls will travel to Bowling Green on Friday in the first semifinal match at 4pm while #6 Ohio will take on #7 Eastern Michigan at 7pm.
