BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team saw their 2019 season come to an end as the Bulls fell to top-seed Bowling Green 2-1 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals on Friday evening at Cochrane Stadium.
The Bulls had their first scoring opportunity in the 12th minute as Marcy Barberic slipped behind the Falcons defense and ripped one on net but Kathleen Duwve made a point blank save.
Buffalo caught a bad break in the 18th minute as the Bulls were called for a hand ball in the box and MAC Offensive Player of the Year Chelsee Washington converted the ensuing penalty kick goal to give BGSU a 1-0 lead.
BGSU would add to their lead in the 25th minute as Washington played a ball up field to Sarah Allen who slid it into the box right to the foot of Katie Cox who flicked it past Emily Kelly to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons had a couple of point blank looks in the 29th minute but Kelly made a pair of sliding saves to limit the damage.
Offense would be at a premium for both teams to start the second half with limited shot attempts on either side of the field. BGSU had a good look in the 66th minute as Mackenzie Reuber charged on net but Kelly came out to make the save.
Buffalo caught a break in the 80th minute as the Falcons got called for a foul in the box and Barberic stepped up and drilled the penalty kick into the top left corner of the net to cut the BGSU lead to 2-1.
The Falcons were on the attack again less than a minute later as Kennedy White drilled a shot on net from inside the box but Kelly made a leaping save to punch the ball over the crossbar but the Bulls would not manage a shot the rest of the way before time expired.
BGSU held the 16-6 edge in total shots, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. In net, Kelly made seven saves for UB while Duwve made three stops for the Falcons. Kelly was named Player of the Match by the UB coaching staff for her efforts in between the pipes.
"It's never easy when the season comes to an end, but what I love about these players is their fight," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We went toe to toe with the most dominant team I've seen in my time in the conference and we gave ourselves a chance. I cannot thank our seniors enough for their dedication and everything they gave to this program. We will miss them dearly!"
The Bulls finished the season with a 9-8-3 overall record.
