BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's basketball head coach Felisha Legette-Jack announced the signing of Summer Hemphill to a National Letter of Intent. Hemphill, a 6-foot-1 forward, is a Western New York star that will join the Bulls for the 2016-17 season after playing four seasons at Cardinal O'Hara High School.
"We are very excited to have Summer Hemphill join our UB family," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "She will bring athleticism, work ethic, energy, and speed to our post position. We see her at the point of our press causing havoc, in the back of our match-up with her lateral quickness, and on the receiving end of our transition. It is a thrill to have another local great talent stay home and help us build UB Women's basketball into, arguably, the best women's basketball team in Western New York."
The first team All-WNY performer finished off her impressive senior season averaging 16.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.1 steals per contest as she led the Hawks to a 23-3 overall record and a Monsignor Martin Association championship. The athletic forward was also named All-Catholic Player of the Year following her great senior season as well as earning Most Valuable Player honors at the Pastor Cooper Tournament, Jamestown Tournament and Lady Dragons Tournament.
One of the top players in all of WNY, Hemphill also earned third team All-WNY honors during her junior campaign and was a four-year team captain for the Hawks. She also played volleyball and ran track at Cardinal O'Hara, earning second team All-Catholic in volleyball and helping the 4x100 relay team earn a State Championship on the track.
"We have now made our program into a destination," emphasized Legette-Jack. "This is an unbelievable academic institution and we believe that with Summer and a few others saying yes to our program, our team will match our academics. Join me in welcoming Summer Hemphill to our UB family!"
Hemphill is rated as a three-star recruit with an 88 scouts grade by ESPN. The agile forward will provide the defending Mid-American Conference Champions with some much needed depth in the frontcourt next season.
