BUFFALO, NY – The Mid-American Conference announced their postseason awards on Monday afternoon and for just the fifth time in UB women's basketball history they received an All-MAC First Team member. Joanna Smith became the fourth UB player named to the first team while Sophomore Stephanie Reid earned All-MAC Third Team accolades and was named to the inaugural All-Defensive team.
Smith is the first UB player since Brittany Hedderson in 2012 to earn All-MAC First Team honors. She was also the lone junior that made the squad, joined by four seniors.
Smith has had a career year for the Bulls so far as she finished fourth in the conference in scoring (18.0 PPG) and second in scoring in conference games, averaging 19.3 PPG. The dynamic scorer has accumulated 14 games with 20+ points while also scoring a career-high 31 points against Northern Illinois earlier this season. The Southaven, MS native has turned into a three-point marksman this season as she has netted a career-high 85 triples, ranking third in the conference and third in program history for three-pointers made in a season. The sharp shooter has made at least one three-pointer in 28 of 29 games this season while registering 18 games with three or more trifectas.
In only her junior year, Smith has already began to etch her name in the UB record books as she is currently 8th all-time in three-point attempts (321) and 10th all-time in three-pointers made (104). The junior also currently ranks third in three-pointers made in a season (85), fifth in points in a season (522), sixth in points per game in a season (18.0) and seventh in field goals in a season (184). She has also claimed four MAC East Player of the Week awards, ranking second in program history for a single season.
Smith is joined on the All-MAC First Team by Akron's Anita Brown, Ball State's Nathalie Fontaine, Ohio's Kiyanna Black and Toledo's Brenae Harris.
Reid has turned into one of the best pure point guards in the conference this season as she earned All-MAC Third Team honors for the first time in her UB career. The sophomore finished the regular season ranking second on the Bulls in scoring, averaging 10.3 PPG while also leading the squad in assists (4.8 APG) and grabbing 3.5 RPG. The nifty floor general had a career game earlier this season against Western Michigan as she netted a career-high 25 points on 9-for-15 from the floor to go along with five steals and three assists. Reid has scored in double figures 14 times this season and earned at least five assists in a game on 17 occasions.
Reid was also named to the All-MAC Defensive team, a new team added this season, after a great year on the defensive side of the ball. The Australian native turned into one of the best defenders in the conference this season as she led the Bulls and ranked fourth in the conference in steals (1.9 SPG). Reid's 55 steals were a career-high as she was continuously asked to guard the opposing teams best perimeter player. Along with the steals, Reid proved to be pivotal in drawing charges for the Bulls, leading the squad in charges taken for the season.
Reid is joined on the third team by Ball State's Jill Morrison, Bowling Green's Lauren Tibbs, Eastern Michigan's Janay Morton and Northern Illinois' Ally Lehman.
MAC Player of the Year, Freshman and Coach of the Year will be announced on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulls will play in the first round of the MAC Tournament tonight at 5:30 pm as they welcome ninth-seeded Bowling Green to Alumni Arena. The winner of Monday's game will head to Cleveland to take on the top-seeded Ohio Bobcats on Wednesday at the Quicken Loans Arena at noon.
