BUFFALO, NY – Junior Joanna Smith from the University at Buffalo women's basketball team was named Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, as announced by the conference office on Monday. Smith is the first Bull to earn the weekly award four times in a season since Kourtney Brown did it five times in 2010-11.
The Southaven, MS native had another great week for the Bulls as they were able to go 1-1 with an upset victory over first-place Ohio. Smith finished off her week averaging 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 assists while leading the team in scoring in both games.
On Wednesday, Smith not only had a huge impact on the offensive end of the court but also defensively on one of the better players in the conference in Ohio's Kiyanna Black. The junior netted 16 points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists while also holding Black to 12 points on 4-for-21 from the floor. On Saturday, Smith was able to get over the 20-point plateau, 21 points, for the 11th time this season and the ninth time in her last 12 games. She finished the game going 8-for-15 while grabbing five rebounds and two steals in the loss to Ball State.
The smooth shooter leads the Bulls and ranks third in the MAC in scoring (18.6 PPG) while also averaging 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 steals. Smith currently leads the MAC in scoring in conference games (21.6 PPG) and first in three pointers made (35). She now has netted a team-best 63 three-pointers on the year, ranking seventh in program history in threes made in a season.
Smith and the Bulls will return to the hardwood on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm as they travel to take on the Toledo Rockets.
