BUFFALO, NY – The UB women's basketball team announced the signing of two players for the 2014-15 campaign Friday afternoon, heading to the other side of the world to fill out its roster. Joining the team will be Katherine and Liisa Ups, a set of twin sisters from Australia.
"We're very fortunate to have these twins committed to us from Australia, they're the first set of twins we've ever had come to Buffalo and we're excited for their potential," said head coach Felisha Legette-Jack. "One will be a backup point guard and the other will be a slashing two-guard."
Katherine is a defensive stalwart who was a co-captain and co-defensive player of the year for her Illawara U18 club team in New South Wales (NSW). Coming to the team as a shooting guard, she was a part of the Australian U19 national team and led her New South Wales team to a 2013 state championship and recently a silver-medal finish for the 2014 season.
Liisa is an intelligent point guard who is an excellent student and a student of the game of basketball. While playing alongside her sister for the 2013 state championship team and 2014 silver medal season, she shared defensive player of the year honors with her as well. She is a NSW Institute of Sport scholarship recipient and was named the New South Coast Combined Sports Person of the Year. Also, she won the Sharon Bird Award as a local sporting champion.
"We're excited to add them to the 11 women already committed to our program and for the future of our program going forward," Jack added.
The Ups will join two players who signed with the Bulls in the November signing period. Destiny Woodard (Port Orange, FL) and Mariah Suchan (Wichita, KS) will also join a UB team that returns 82 percent of its scoring and also welcomes back four players who missed significant time due to injury that includes Rachel Gregory, who averaged 10.7 points and 6.3 rebounds as a freshman in 2012-13.
