CLEVELAND, OH – The University at Buffalo women's basketball team continues play in the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday afternoon as the sixth-seeded Bulls face the third seed Central Michigan. The game will take place at the Quicken Loans Arena, the home of the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers.
UB is coming off a first round home victory over Ball State, 82-73, on Saturday afternoon as four players scored in double figures for the Bulls. Buffalo is led by newly crowned MAC Player of the Year Kourtney Brown, who was also named MAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Brown leads the Bulls in scoring (22.1), rebounding (11.7), field goal percentage (.595) and blocked shots (3.3). She is one of two players in double figures in scoring for the Bulls as Brittany Hedderson chips in 11.1 points per contest. The UB offense is run by senior Ashley Zuber, who is currently second in school history with 183 assists on the season. She is just five assists away from the single-season mark.
The Chippewas enter the game off a first-round bye and have one of the most potent offenses in the nation averaging 81.2 points per game. The Chippewas have five players averaging in double figures led by 16.1 points from Shonda Long. Kaihla Szunko averages 15.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per contest. The Chippewas also have the 2011 MAC Freshman of the Year in Niki DiGuilio, who is averaging 10.8 points per game.
The Bulls defeated Central Michigan earlier this season in Mt. Pleasant, 92-89. Brown became UB's all-time leading scorer and rebounder in the game, while senior Jessica Fortman scored her 1,000th career point against the Chippewas.
The winner of the Buffalo-Central Michigan game will face either Bowling Green or Ohio in the MAC Semifinals on Friday at 12:00 pm.
For those unable to attend, the game will air live on 1340 AM WLVL with Nick Mendola and Scott Wilson on the call.
