Bulls Soar Past Niagara With 2-0 Win on Thursday

NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-1-1) defeated Niagara 2-0 at Niagara Field on Thursday night.
Junior Laiken Kiser had a banner night, recording the first multi-goal game of her career. She is the second Bull this season to record two or more goals in a game, joining Jasmine Guerber who notched a pair in a win over Canisius in the season opener.
The Bulls controlled possession in the early going before Guerber got off a pair of shots in the opening 10 minutes of play, but Niagara goalkeeper Julia Poissant was there for the stops.
Buffalo broke through in the 15th minute as Guerber settled a long ball from Ellie Simmons and found Kiser who one-timed a shot into the back of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
UB had another scoring opportunity late in the half as Maddy Murphy ripped a shot from point blank range, but Poissant was there once again for the save and the Bulls maintained a one-goal lead at the break.
The hosts looked to create scoring chances of their own early in the second half as Mahelie Barbeau made a run up the right side and fired a shot on net, but Lexie Thompson leaped up to make a great save and punch the ball out of play.
Buffalo then went back on the attack as Carolyn Hinkle ripped a shot in stride and then a few minutes later, Simmons took a corner kick and played a great ball to the head of Eva Blatz who flicked a shot on target, but Poissant was there on both occasions to thwart the attack.
Kiser notched her second goal of the night in the 71st minute as Simmons played another great ball into the box that got kicked around before eventually finding the foot of Koby Commandant who slid a pass to Kiser and she found the back of the net to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead and that would be all the Bulls needed to secure the victory.
Buffalo outshot the Purple Eagles 11-5, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, while also maintaining an 1-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Thompson made two saves on the night while Poissant recorded five stops for Niagara.
Up next, Buffalo returns home to host Mercyhurst in the non-conference finale on Thursday, September 11 at 7pm.
