Bulls Drop Heartbreaker to Ohio on Sunday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-2-3, 1-1-0 MAC) saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end as the Bulls fell to the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
Buffalo outshot Ohio 12-8 overall and 7-4 in shots on goal but were unable to find the back of the net, including in the 89th minute when the Bulls drew a foul in the box but were unable to convert the ensuing penalty goal.
The Bulls were the aggressors in the early going as Leah Wengender slid a ball to Arianna Zumpano who got a shot off, but it was saved by Celeste Sloma. UB was at it again a minute later as Zumpano put a shot on net and the rebound off the save went to Katie Krohn but Sloma made another save to escape the jam.
The missed opportunities proved costly as the Bobcats flipped the script and capitalized in the 29th minute as Rayann Pruss found Shae Robertson by herself in the box and she knocked it into the back of the net to give Ohio a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls had one last look late in the half as Zumpano had a shot blocked and then Kaylin Ricci found space but her shot sailed high and wide and the Bobcats maintained a one goal lead at the break.
Ohio continued to attack to start the second half as Maia Kaufman took a shot on net in the 52nd minute but Rebecca Winslow made the save.
Buffalo began to fight back shortly thereafter as Wengender used some fancy footwork to break free and fired a shot on net that was saved by Sloma. Later, in the 83rd minute Maya Galko took a corner kick and played a great ball into the box that found the head of Ricci, but she didn't quite get all of it as Sloma was there for the save and Sloma would come up big one more time on the penalty kick save in the final seconds to preserve the clean sheet.
Winslow finished the day with three saves while Sloma made seven stops for the Bobcats.
Up next, the Bulls welcome Miami (OH) to UB Stadium on Thursday, September 28 at 6pm.
