BUFFALO, NY – University at Buffalo women's soccer head coach Shawn Burke won the 100th game of his career as the Bulls defeated Miami (OH) 2-0 on Thursday night at UB Stadium. With the win, UB improves to 5-2-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
In his 180th game at the helm in Buffalo, Burke is the fastest coach in program history to reach the milestone and is currently second all-time in career wins.
"I love that I did it here, all 100 games in Buffalo," said Burke. "We have had so many fantastic players that have made this moment possible. And if you look at the staff I've had over that time, I've been surrounded by some amazing people. The fact that I've been able to do it at this place and with the people I've been able to do it with, that's what makes it so special."
The Bulls came out aggressive to start the game, recording their first scoring opportunity of the game in the seventh minute as Ellie Simmons took a corner kick and played a great ball in that was knocked out to the foot of Olivia Bizzoni who settled a fired a shot on target, but Dominique Popa made a leaping save.
UB got on the board in the 13th minute as Arianna Zumpano fired a shot on net that Popa knocked away, but Katie Krohn settled the ball at the top of the box and drilled a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls were at it again in the 26th minute as Simmons took the corner kick and played another great ball into the box that got knocked around, but Krohn was in the right place at the right time once again as she gained possession and fired a shot across the box into the bottom left corner of the net to put UB up 2-0.
Buffalo continued to attack as Moa Andersson played a ball to Marissa Foster who found Ashley Reyes at the top of the box but her shot sailed just wide. UB had one more look in the 43rd minute as Simmons took a free kick and played another great ball that curled on target but came up just short as Popa fell on it for the save and it would remain a two-goal lead for the Bulls at the half.
It was a defensive battle for most of the second half, with the two teams combining for just six total shots. Miami (OH) had a pair of looks in the 50th and 55th minutes but Rebecca Winslow came up big with two great saves.
Buffalo looked to add to their lead in the 77th minute as Reyes slid a ball through to Laiken Kiser and she ripped a shot on net that just sailed high. Later, Sarah Woods and Krohn made great runs that resulted in scoring opportunities that just missed off target but that would be all the Bulls would need as they controlled possession over the final minutes of play to secure the victory.
The Bulls outshot the RedHawks 15-4 on the night, including a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-5 edge in corner kick opportunities. Winslow recorded the second shutout of her Buffalo career with two saves while the UB backline earned their fifth shutout of the season. Andersson was named Player of the Game for her phenomenal efforts in the win.
