YPSILANTI, MI – University at Buffalo women's soccer sophomore forward Katie Krohn recorded her fourth multi-goal game of the season, but it wasn't enough as Eastern Michigan scored a pair of late goals to play to a 3-3 draw with the Bulls at Scicluna Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls recorded their first scoring opportunity of the game in the first minute as Leah Wengender got a shot off, but Ella Holland made the save. Ten minutes later, Wengender took a shot that sailed high, and Kaya Schultz followed with a shot that also missed over the net.
The Eagles controlled the field for the middle portion of the first half as they had three shots on target, but Rebecca Winslow made a trio of saves to keep the Eagles off the board.
Buffalo was able to flip the field and make some noise in their final third as Ellie Simmons drilled a ball on net that sailed high before Ashleigh Fortunate got in the mix with a pair of good looks on target, but Holland made the ensuing stops and the game remained scoreless at the break.
UB attacked off the kickoff to start the second half as Arianna Zumpano flew up the field and fired a shot just 16 seconds in that was saved by Holland.
The Bulls broke through in the 55th minute as Krohn scored off the assist by Wengender and Zumpano to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
UB continued to press as Olivia Bizzoni and Laiken Kiser got off a pair of shots, but both were saved by Holland. The Eagles got on the board less than five minutes later as Cameryn Susey scored to tie the game at one.
The Bulls remained poised as sophomore Ashley Reyes fired a shot at the upper left corner of the net, but Holland made a great save. Reyes wouldn't miss twice though, as just a few minutes later, Zumpano found Reyes again and this time she converted for the first goal of her UB career to put UB up 2-1.
UB wasn't done yet as Krohn was at it again just a few minutes later as she drilled a ball into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season, off the assist from Reyes to give the Bulls a 3-1 lead.
Eastern Michigan then scored a goal in the 84th minute to cut the UB lead to one and then just a few minutes later, UB committed a foul in the box and Olivia Sipsock converted the ensuing penalty kick goal to tie the game at three.
The Bulls outshot the Eagles 21-9, including a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal, and an 8-4 edge in corner kick opportunities. Winslow recorded four saves on the day while Holland made 10 stops for Eastern Michigan. Freshman Eva Blatz was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her energy off the bench and overall impact in the midfield.
"This one is on me," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Credit to Eastern Michigan for their fight, but I should have made changes considering the conditions and I asked too much of them today. Drawing after being up 3-1 with 15 minutes to go should never happen and I have to take ownership of that."
Up next, Buffalo will return to the state of Michigan for a contest in Mount Pleasant against the Central Michigan Chippewas on Thursday, October 5 at 7pm.
