Bulls Fall to Ball State on Sunday

BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (5-3-5, 2-2-2 MAC) fell to Ball State 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
The Bulls had the first shot of the day as Moa Andersson made a good run and fired a shot across the box, but Bethany Moser made the save.
Ball State struck first in the 12th minute following a corner kick as the ball got knocked around in the box but eventually to the foot of Avery Fenchel who poked a shot into the far corner of the net to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals took advantage of a defensive miscue by UB in the 27th minute as a ball was played back to Rebecca Winslow and she tried to clear it, but it went off Lexi Fraley and into the net to put Ball State up 2-0.
Buffalo looked attack as Katie Krohn and Marissa Foster recorded shots on target on back-to-back possessions, but Moser and the Ball State defense cleared the attempts away.
Ball State added to their lead 10 minutes later as Fenchel found free space and drilled a shot that rode the wind and sailed over a leaping Winslow and in from 25 yards out to give the visitors a 3-0 lead at the half.
UB came out with energy to start the second half as Arianna Zumpano made a great run but was stymied by Moser on the breakaway and then later, Leah Wengender made a great run and laid it off to Krohn who put a great strike on it, but Moser made the save.
Ball State capitalized on a defensive miscue by the Bulls in the 54th minute as Fraley poked a shot by Winslow to put UB up 4-0. The Cardinals then added another goal 10 minutes later to extend their lead to 5-0 and that would be the final.
The Bulls maintained a 12-5 advantage in total shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal but were unable to break through. Winslow made five saves on the day while Moser made eight stops for Ball State.
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, October 12 at Northern Illinois.
