DEKALB, IL β The University at Buffalo women's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over Northern Illinois in blustery conditions at the NIU Soccer Complex on Thursday afternoon. With the win the Bulls improve to 6-3-5 overall and 3-2-2 in league play.
The Bulls were on the attack from the opening kickoff as, in the second minute, Leah Wengender fed Katie Krohn and she ripped a shot across the box, but Sadie McGill made a sliding kick save and the Huskies' backline cleared the ball just before it crossed the goal line.
Buffalo was at it again a few minutes later as Arianna Zumpano made a great run before drawing a foul by McGill in the box and Katie Krohn converted the ensuing penalty kick for her league-leading 12th goal of the year to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
The stellar ball movement continued in the 24th minute as the Bulls weaved through the defense and Sarah Woods drilled a shot on target from the top of the box, but McGill was there for the save.
The UB backline controlled things from there as Buffalo allowed just one shot in the final seconds of the first half and they maintained a one-goal lead at the break.
The Bulls continued to stay aggressive to start the second half as Zumpano made a pair of great runs, the latter resulting in a shot on goal, and then in the 49th minute Woods ripped a shot on goal, but McGill made a fantastic diving save to knock the ball out of play. On the ensuing corner kick, Ellie Simmons played a great ball into the box that found the head of Eva Blatz, but her header clanged off the top crossbar and out of play.
UB added an insurance goal in the 60th minute as Krohn drew a foul that resulted in a free kick taken by Maya Galko who slid a pass it to Kaya Schultz and she played a great ball up into the box and Zumpano tracked it down at the end line and dribbled around McGill before firing a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put UB up 2-0. Β
Senior Rebecca Winslow came up big in a pair of dangerous moments for UB, first in the 72nd minute as the Huskies fired a shot from deep across the box but she laid out to make a diving save and then later in the final seconds of the game, dove to make another stop to thwart the last-minute attack as the Bulls secured the shutout victory.
The Bulls outshot the Huskies 11-6, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Winslow recorded the third shutout of her Buffalo career with a season-best five saves while the UB backline earned their sixth clean sheet of the season. Simmons and Emily Lazenby were named Co-Players of the Game by the UB coaching staff for their efforts in the win.
"I love this group," said head coach Shawn Burke. "With the week that they have endured, and the results that have gone the way that they have, this group could have folded. They showed their true character and put in such a gutsy performance for 90 minutes. It was a group effort and everyone played a huge part in today's win."
Up next, Buffalo returns home on Sunday, October 15 to host Bowling Green on Senior Day at UB Stadium at 1pm.
