Bulls Host Canisius, Travel to Duquesne This Week

BUFFALO, NY – After putting up a strong fight at third-ranked Rutgers last weekend, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1-0) returns to action with a pair of games this week as the Bulls host crosstown rival Canisius on Thursday night before traveling to Pittsburgh to take on the Duquesne Dukes on Sunday afternoon.
On Thursday it will be the 40th all-time meeting between Buffalo and Canisius with the Bulls holding a 25-11-3 series edge. The Bulls defeated the Golden Griffins 2-0 at the Demske Sports Complex last season.
On Sunday, Buffalo and Duquesne will meet for the 10th time with the Bulls owning a narrow 4-2-3 series advantage. The Bulls defeated the Dukes 4-0 at UB Stadium last year.
The Bulls will look to bounce back from their first defeat of the season as they led at the half but ultimately came up short in a 2-1 loss at third-ranked Rutgers on Sunday. The Bulls scored in the 30th minute as Ellie Simmons played a great ball up field to Jasmine Guerber who evaded her defender and fired a shot into the bottom left corner of the net for the go-ahead goal.
Buffalo currently ranks 21st in the nation in points per game (8.75) and 12th total assists (15) while ranking 33rd in total points (35). Guerber ranks fifth in total goals (5) and goals per game (1.25) and eighth in total points (11). Additionally, her two game-winning goals are tied with nine other players for best in the nation. Simmons ranks third in total assists (5) and second in assists per game (1.25).
Canisius enters Thursday's match with a 1-1-1 overall record after falling 2-1 at Detroit Mercy on Sunday. Junior Tiani Fonoti leads the Golden Griffins with two goals and an assist on the year while Skylar Cornell and Emily Brewer have one goal each. In net, Canisius has relied on sophomore Jordan Spencer who has made seven saves and owns a .700 save percentage and 1.50 goals against average on the year.
Duquesne enters the weekend with a 2-2 overall record with wins over Ohio and Youngstown State. They fell to Drexel 2-0 on Thursday. The Dukes have been balanced offensively as four different players have recorded a goal. Sophomore Maddy Neundorfer has led Duquesne between the pipes, compiling a 2-2 overall record with a 1.83 goals against average and 26 saves in three starts.
Following the weekend, the Bulls will have a week off before hosting Colgate on Sunday, September 11 at 1pm.
