BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-1-0) defeated crosstown rival Canisius 1-0 on a goal by red-hot sophomore forward Jasmine Guerber in the 71st minute at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
Guerber has been one of the most clutch players in the country as she now has five goals overall, including three game-winners.
Offense was at a premium in the first half with the teams combining for just seven shots, with the Bulls holding the slight 3-2 edge in shots on goal and a 2-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
The Bulls had their first look of the game in the 10th minute as sophomore Alya Ruken broke free at the top of the box and put a ball on net, but Jordan Spencer made the save. Later, freshman Ellie Simmons had free kick opportunities and played a great ball on goal, but Spencer was there for the save once again. Sophomore Olivia Bizzoni broke free in the final minutes of the first half and got a shot off but the ball sailed wide, and the game remained scoreless at the half.
Canisius came out attacking to start the second half as they had a pair of great looks in the 48th and 49th minutes as two Golden Griffins banged shots off the crossbar.
The two teams went back-and-forth before the Bulls broke through in the 71st minute as Tess Ford found Simmons who played a great ball through to Guerber and she drilled a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give UB a 1-0 lead and that would be the final as the Buffalo backline held Canisius without a shot over the final 20 minutes of play.
Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly made three saves in her third win of the season while Spencer finished with eight stops for Canisius. Senior midfielder Payton Robertson was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"We say all the time, winning is hard so we will take the win tonight, especially the first shutout win of the season," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Give credit to Canisius, they are much improved from last year and caused a lot of problems for us. But we are so fortunate to have a player of Jasmine's caliber. The team has confidence that no matter what is going on, if you have a player like that running up top, we are always going to give ourselves a chance."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, September 4 as they travel to Pittsburgh for match against the Duquesne Dukes at 1pm.
