PITTSBURGH, PA – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team picked up their second straight win as they defeated Duquesne 1-0 at Field on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls were aggressive from the start as they controlled possession from the opening kickoff and it would pay off in the sixth minute as Jasmine Guerber fired a shot off the post from inside the box and was taken down in the process and freshman Katie Krohn converted on the ensuing penalty kick goal in the sixth minute to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
The teams battled back-and-forth through the midfield for most of the first half before Buffalo had a pair of good looks late in the half as Ellie Simmons took a corner kick and played a good ball across the box that found the foot of Emily Lazenby who ripped a shot on net and later Arianna Zumpano got free and played a ball on goal but Maddy Neuendorfer was there for the save both times and UB would maintain a one goal lead at the break.
Buffalo dominated the possession battle once again in the second half as the UB midfielders and defenders kept Duquesne out of their final third, allowing just three second half shots and only one on goal.
UB had plenty of chances in the second half as they outshot the Dukes 11-3, including 5-1 in shots on goal, for an 18-4 shots advantage overall while also maintaining a 10-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly was forced to make only one save on the afternoon as she picked up her fourth win and second shutout of the season. Graduate student defender Tess Ford was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her decision making and composure in the shutout.
"Overall, really pleased with today's performance," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We struggled Thursday to build up and it was the best part of our game today. Winning on the road is tough and the team did well to get the result."
Buffalo will now have a week off before returning to action on Sunday, September 11 when they welcome Colgate to UB Stadium for a 1pm tilt.
