BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (5-1-0) picked up their third straight shutout victory as they defeated Colgate 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
After a bit of a slow start for both teams the Bulls' offense got going in a hurry as Leah Wengender found Emily Lazenby and she played a beautiful ball into the box that found the head of a leaping Tess Ford who flicked the ball into the back of the net to put UB up 1-0.
Buffalo added to their lead just a few minutes later as freshman Katie Krohn tracked down a free ball and played a great ball up the field to the foot of Wengender who carried it and then ripped a shot into the bottom left corner of the net past a diving Grace Poncsak to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Raiders had a couple scoring opportunities late in the half but Emily Kelly and the UB defense came away with the stops as the Bulls maintained a two-goal lead at the half.
UB continued to attack out of the break as freshmen Marissa Foster and Krohn ripped a pair of great shots on net midway through the second half, but Poncsak made a pair of good saves. Sophomore Arianna Zumpano found herself with a good look in front of the net in the final minutes of the game and just missed on the shot attempt, but the Bulls had the game locked up by then as the backline allowed just one shot over the final 45 minutes of play to preserve the victory.
The Bulls outshot the Raiders 13-5, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal and a 7-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities. Kelly recorded three stops on the afternoon while Poncsak made six stops for Colgate. Fifth year defender Abbey Callaghan was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her efforts in the shutout.
"I think you saw in the first couple games of the year, we were pumping in some goals and then we shifted focus to get a little more control in games," said associate head coach Casey Derkacz. "I think Emily coming off three straight shutouts is great for her confidence and the backline as well. Being able to control and dictate games is a great thing and then with a game like today, the way we limited their scoring opportunities, that is something to be proud of."
Buffalo returns to action next Sunday, September 18 as they host Yale at 1pm in the final game of non-conference play.
