BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (6-1) recorded their fourth straight shutout victory as they closed out non-conference play with a 2-0 win over Yale on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
The Bulls struck first as Jasmine Guerber was taken down in the box in the 20th minute and Katie Krohn capitalized, drilling the ensuing penalty kick into the bottom right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo continued to attack as Marissa Foster got a head on a ball off a UB set piece that the Bulldogs cleared and later, Guerber had a pair of great looks in stride, but both sailed just high.
The Bulls continued to put themselves in scoring position and it paid off in the 43rd minute as Taylor Caridi found Abbey Callaghan who delivered a perfect ball into the box right to the head of Annie Judasz who flicked it into the back of the net for her first goal of the year to put UB up 2-0 at the half.
Buffalo continued to create scoring opportunities in the second half as Foster gave the Bulls great minutes, getting a pair of shots on target in the 55th minute but Maya Bellomo was there for the saves. Sophomore Arianna Zumpano got her head on a ball in the box in the 74th minute but it clanged off the crossbar and Caridi continued to play aggressively, nearly missing in the 84th minute as she ripped a shot from just outside the box that ricocheted off the crossbar.
The Bulls dominated on both ends of the field as they held a 23-5 advantage in shots, including an 8-1 edge in shots on goal, while also maintaining a 7-3 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly needed to make just one save on the day while Bellomo made six stops for Yale. Senior Leah Wengender was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff for her efforts in the win.
"I think the biggest takeaway for us is that we've gotten better after every game," said head coach Shawn Burke. "To concede goals in the first three and then not give up anything in the next four is a big testament to the players. We will still look to improve and there are areas that we can get better, but I think that the fact that we have such a deep bench with so many different players contributing and getting on the scoresheet, I think it makes us really dangerous going into MAC play."
Buffalo returns to play on Thursday, September 22 as they open Mid-American Conference play against Akron. Kickoff from UB Stadium is set for 7pm.
