Bulls Open MAC Play This Weekend

BUFFALO, NY – After a strong non-conference showing, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (6-1) opens Mid-American Conference play with a pair of games this weekend. The Bulls welcome Akron to UB Stadium on Thursday before traveling to Athens, OH for a clash with the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday afternoon.
Thursday's game is also Alzheimer's awareness night at UB Stadium. Fans are encouraged to wear purple to raise awareness for the cause.
It will be the 23rd meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Bulls holding an 11-8-3 series advantage. UB defeated Akron 1-0 at UB Stadium in the final game of the regular season a year ago.
On Sunday it will be the 27th meeting between Buffalo and Ohio with the Bulls holding a narrow 13-12-1 series edge. The Bulls have won four of the last six meetings with the Bobcats. Ohio defeated UB 2-1 in the opening game of league play last season.
Buffalo ended non-conference play on a four-game win streak, including four straight shutouts, and are 33rd in the first RPI rankings of the season, the highest since UB rose to 32 after winning the 2014 MAC Tournament. The Bulls were ranked 37th at the end of the 2021 covid-shortened spring championship season.
Sophomore forward Jasmine Guerber leads the Bulls with five goals and an assist. Sophomore Arianna Zumpano has scored three goals while Leah Wengender and Katie Krohn have all netted a pair of goals. The Bulls lead the MAC in Total assists (20) and assists per game (2.86) and rank second in total goals (15), scoring offense (2.14), points per game (7.14), and total points (50). Guerber leads the league in total goals (5), goals per game (0.71) and game-winning goals (3) and is second in total points (11). Freshman Ellie Simmons is the MAC-leader in total assists (5) and assists per game (0.71) while fifth year goalkeeper Emily Kelly leads the conference in shutouts (4), and goals against average (0.57) while ranking third with an 0.810 save percentage.
Akron enters Thursday's match with a 1-2-2 overall record after falling 2-0 at Dayton on September 11. The Zips are led offensively by freshman Emma King has recorded two goals while sophomores Caitlin Bruni and Morgan Prentz have recorded one goal each. Penelope Curinier and Maxima Carlitz have split time between the pipes for Akron, combining for 23 saves, and a 1.40 goals against average over five games.
Ohio enters the weekend with a 4-2-1 overall record after defeating Western Carolina 3-0 in their final non-conference test. Graduate student forward Abby Townsend is having another great year for the Bobcats as she leads the team with four goals and five assists. The Bobcats are balanced offensively as six other Bobcats have scored multiple goals this season. In net, Ohio is led by freshman Celeste who has made 24 saves and owns a 0.857 save percentage and a 0.73 goals against average in seven starts.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will stay on the road as they travel to Toledo for a clash with the Rockets on Thursday, September 29 at 7pm.
