BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (5-1) closes out the non-conference portion of their schedule on Sunday afternoon as they welcome the Yale Bulldogs to UB Stadium for a 1pm tilt on Sunday afternoon.
It will be just the second meeting between the two schools. The Bulls defeated the Bulldogs 3-2 in an overtime thriller at Reese Stadium last season.
The Bulls, currently ranked sixth in the Midwest Region weekly poll, are coming off their third straight shutout as they defeated Colgate 2-0 on Sunday. The Bulls notched a pair of first half goals as graduate student defender Tess Ford scored her first goal of the year, a header, off a great ball from teammate Emily Lazenby in the 15th minute. UB added their second goal just a few minutes later as freshman Katie Krohn tracked down a free ball and played a great ball up the field to the foot of Leah Wengender who carried it and then ripped a shot into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead and that would be more than enough to secure the victory as the Bulls outshot the Raiders 13-5, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal and a 7-1 advantage in corner kick opportunities on the game.
Buffalo currently ranks ninth in the nation in assists per game (3.0), 30th in total assists (18), 42nd in points per game (7.33), 45th in shots on goal per game (8.0), 52nd in goals against average (0.667) and 69th in total points (44). Sophomore Jasmine Guerber ranks 41st in total goals (5), 21st in goals per game (0.83) and 30th in points per game (1.83). Additionally, her three game-winning goals are fifth best in the nation. Freshman Ellie Simmons ranks 11th in total assists (5) and ninth in assists per game (0.83) while Emily Kelly ranks 45th in shutouts (3) and 57th in goals against average (0.667).
Yale enters Sunday's match with a 3-2-1 overall record after falling at Kansas 4-1 on Sunday. Sophomore Ellie Rappole leads the Bulldogs with two goals and an assist on the year. The rest of the offensive attack is balanced with five other players recording a goal this season. Sophomore Maya Bellomo has led Yale between the pipes, compiling a 3-2-1 overall record with 32 saves, a 0.842 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average in six starts.
Up next, the Bulls will open Mid-American Conference play on Thursday, September 22 as they welcome Akron to UB Stadium for a 7pm showdown under the lights.
