BINGHAMTON, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-1-0) defeated Binghamton 1-0 at the Bearcats Sports Complex on Sunday night. It was the first clean sheet for the Bulls this season.
Buffalo had their first good look of the game in the 14th minute as Marcy Barberic dropped a pass off to Gianna Yurchak in the box and she fired a shot in stride but Haylee Poltorak made a great save for Binghamton.
The Bulls would capitalize just a few minutes later as Alya Ruken played a great ball through to Barberic and she ripped a shot past the diving keeper to give UB a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute and they would maintain that lead at the half.
After Binghamton maintained possession early in the second half, Buffalo was on the attack again as Leah Wengender got to a loose ball in the 54th minute and fired a ball on net but it was right at Poltorak who made the save.
The Bearcats had a pair of good looks late in the game as Maya Anand broke free from a scrum and ripped a shot on net but it sailed just high and later Lexi Vegoda fired a ball in from outside the box but Emily Kelly knocked it down as she and the Bulls defense preserved the clean sheet.
Kelly finished the game with two saves in her first shutout victory of the season, while Poltorak had four stops for Binghamton. Senior Tess Ford was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches.
"Another great opponent presented us with some problems tonight," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We would have liked to create more changes but to come on the road and get the first clean sheet is a big step for us."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, September 9 as they travel across town to face local rival Canisius at 7pm.
