OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team picked up their first win of this spring championship season in dominant fashion with a 5-0 victory at Miami (OH) on Sunday afternoon.
The Bulls were aggressive from kickoff and it paid off as UB capitalized on a RedHawks foul in the box and Leah Wengender converted on the penalty kick in the 15th minute to give UB an early 1-0 lead.
The Bulls continued to attack as Payton Robertson played a great ball on goal off of a free kick in the 19th minute that Izzie Vaccari was able to save but just over a minute later, after another free kick, senior Gianna Yurchak found fellow senior captain Marcy Barberic and she drilled a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to put UB up 2-0 at the half.
Buffalo would continue to dominate possession in the second half and the aggressiveness would pay off in the 70th minute as Yurchak ripped a shot into the top right corner of the net to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. The Bulls would add to their lead in the 84th minute as Barberic converted on a penalty kick for her second goal of the game to make it 4-0 UB and just over two minutes later, Yurchak found the back of the net off assists from Barberic and Kaitlyn Walsh to give the Bulls the 5-0 victory.
The Bulls outshot Miami 15-5 on the day, including a 10-3 edge in shots on goal, and also held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
In net, Emily Kelly made three saves for the Bulls in her first shutout of the season. Vaccari made four stops for Miami. Barberic was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches for her efforts in the win.
"I'm so pleased with our team performance today," said head coach Shawn Burke. "The players were rewarded for their dominance in all phases of today's game. It was a well-deserved outcome against a tough Miami side."
Buffalo will have a week off before returning home to host the defending champion Bowling Green Falcons at UB Stadium on Sunday, March 14, at 12pm.
