KENT, OH – The University at Buffalo soccer team (0-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) fell at Kent State 1-0 in the season opener on Wednesday afternoon.
The lone goal of the game came in the 29th minute as Yasmine Hall curled a shot just inside the post past a diving Emily Kelly to give Kent State a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo was on the attack early in the second half as Leah Wengender had a good look from just inside the box but it was right at Sarah Melen who made the save. Later, in the 59th minute after a scrum in the box, Payton Robertson broke free and ripped a shot but Melen met her at the ball and made a tough save.
Freshman Ashlyn O'Shea would have a pair of looks off of free kicks but could not capitalize as Mehlen stopped the first shot and the second attempt sailed high in the 77th minute.
Kent State continued to apply pressure in the second half as the Golden Flashes registered three corners and seven shots but the Bulls defense held strong and did not allow a second goal.
In net, Kelly finished the day with five saves while Melen had four stops. Senior Gianna Yurchak was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"Really proud of the girls fight and effort today," said head coach Shawn Burke. "This was far from a soccer game with the conditions playing such a big factor. They showed up and competed and we just couldn't capitalize on our second half chances."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, March 7, at Miami (OH). Kickoff is set for 1pm.
