BUFFALO, NY – Sophomore Leah Wengender scored in the 108th minute to lift the University at Buffalo women's soccer team to a 2-1 double overtime win over Ohio on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
With the teams tied 1-1 in the second overtime period, Gianna Yurchak played a great ball to Wengender and she drilled a beautiful shot into the top right corner of the net for the game-winner.
"That game could have went either way so it's a great feeling to come out on the positive side," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Both teams battled hard all game and I am just really proud of our resiliency and I think our players were rewarded for their persistence today."
The Bobcats would strike first in the sixth minute off of a free kick as Jenni Santacaterina put one on net and Emily Kelly made the save but Shae Robertson was there for the rebound goal to give Ohio a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls would have two great looks, first in the 28th minute, as Marcy Barberic played a good shot across the box that just missed left and then a couple minutes later, Olivia Bizzoni took the corner kick and curled a ball on net but Reese Dorsey made the save.
Buffalo would continue to attack and it paid off in the 31st minute as Katherine Camper found Gianna Yurchak in front of the net and she banged it home into the bottom left corner of the net to tie the game 1-1 at the half.
The Bulls had some great looks to start the second half as Yurchak, Camper and Barberic all got a shot off in the 47th minute but the Bobcats defense turned them away. Later in the 57th minute, Leah Wengender ripped a shot that banged off the far post and Yurchak was there for the rebound but she was called offside. Bizzoni would continue to attack in the 79th minute as she had three good looks on goal but Dorsey was there for the save.
Ohio had one last chance at the end of regulation as Abby Townsend ripped a shot on goal but Kelly came up with some big save to send the game to overtime.
The Bobcats had a pair of good looks in the first overtime period as Yurchak and Kaitlyn Walsh both got their heads on balls in the box but Dorsey made a pair of saves. The UB defense stepped up big in extra time, allowing just two shots, and that proved to be key as the Bulls were then able to capitalize and walk off with the victory.
In net, Kelly finished the day with six saves while Dorsey had five stops. Yurchak was named Player of the Game by the UB coaching staff.
"With this format the margin of error is slim," said Burke. "It's going to be a battle every game and you have to take advantage of points when you can. Our players taking care of home field was big because it is such a thin line between the teams sitting at the top and bottom."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, March 28, as they welcome Miami (OH) to UB Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12pm.
