OXFORD, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (8-2-1) picked up their second straight MAC win as they defeated Miami (OH) 2-1 at Bobby Kramig Field on Sunday afternoon to hand the RedHawks their first loss in league play.
The Bulls struck first in the eighth minute as Abbey Callaghan took the corner kick found Emily Lazenby who fired a shot past a diving Izzie Vaccari to give Buffalo an early 1-0 lead.
Miami got on the board in the 29th minute as the Bulls were whistled for a handball in the box and Kylee converted on the penalty kick to tie the game at one.
Buffalo answered 10 minutes later as Kaitlyn Walsh lofted a ball into the box and found Annie Judasz who scored on a fantastic diving header to give UB a 2-1 lead.
The Bulls continued to attack to start the second half as Gianna Yurchak and Leah Wengender had a pair of good looks in the 50th minute but Vaccari and the RedHawks came up with a stop.
The RedHawks had a couple good scoring chances late in the second half, including a moment in the 70th minute when Haley Anspach had the ball on a breakaway and ripped a shot on net but Emily Kelly got a hand on it and the UB defense knocked the ball away.
Kelly picked up her second straight win, recording a pair of saves while Vaccari had one stop for Miami. Judasz was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches.
Miami outshot the Buffalo 9-5, but the teams were even with three shots on goal each and UB held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
"Really proud of the group today," said head coach Shawn Burke. "With the conditions, tough PK call and how Miami set up, it was really tough to play our style. A lot of players stepped up and the team grinded out a road win."
The Bulls return to action on Thursday, October 7 as they travel to Ypsilanti, MI for an afternoon tilt with the Eastern Michigan Eagles at 4pm.
