YPSILANTI, MI – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (9-2-1, 3-1-1 MAC) defeated Eastern Michigan in thrilling fashion as senior Taylor Caridi knocked home the game-winner in the 88th minute to give the Bulls a 2-1 victory at Scicluna Field on Thursday afternoon. It is the second game-winner in three contests for Caridi and the third straight win for Buffalo.
Offense was at a premium in the first half as the teams combined for just 10 total shots, with the Bulls maintaining a narrow 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Buffalo had their first opportunity of the half in the 10th minute as Katherine Camper got off a pair of shots, but Chelsea Abbotts and the Eagles made the stop.
Later, in the 44th minute, Gianna Yurchak fired a shot on net, but Abbotts came up with another save. The Eagles were on the attack less than a minute later as Maddie O'Farrell ripped a shot on goal but Emily Kelly made a great save to keep the game scoreless at the half.
Eastern Michigan broke through in the 49th minute when they capitalized on a free kick as Madeline Olson found the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead.
The Bulls answered in the 61st minute as Abbey Callaghan took the corner kick and played a good ball into the box to her sister Hannah Callaghan and she found Leah Wengender who slipped a ball past a diving Abbotts to tie the game.
Buffalo continued to attack, and the aggressiveness paid off in the 88th minute as Emily Lazenby played a ball up the line to Alya Ruken who served a great ball right to the head of Caridi who flicked it inside the near post to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead and secure their second straight road victory.
On the game, Buffalo out shot Eastern Michigan 13-8, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal, and also had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Kelly picked up the win, making two saves on the afternoon while Abbotts made five saves for the Eagles. Caridi was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her fantastic efforts in the win.
"I guess a sign of a good team is finding a way to get a good result when you are not at your best," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We know we have to be better moving forward as the margin for error in this conference is so minimal. It's always tough to play here and the credit goes to the players for finding a way to come back and get the win."
Buffalo returns to action on Sunday, October 9 as they welcome Central Michigan to UB Stadium at 12pm.
