BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team conceded a goal in the 90th minute as they dropped a tough contest with Central Michigan 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at UB Stadium.
Offense was at a premium in the opening half with both teams recording just six shots each. Central Michigan had an early scoring chance in the sixth minute as Jaelyn Dobrowolski got off a shot from point blank range but Emily Kelly made a diving save. Buffalo would have a good opportunity midway through the first half as Arianna Zumpano got off a pair of good shots but Allison LaPoint make the save. The Chippewas continued to attack in the 36th minute as Dobrowolski broke free and ripped a shot on net but Kelly made a fantastic save to keep the game scoreless at the break.
The Bulls came out attacking to start the second half and maintained possession for the majority of the half. Freshman Alya Ruken broke free up the left side in the 64th minute and drilled a shot on net but LaPoint made a fantastic diving save. A few minutes later, Leah Wengender played a great ball into the box to Olivia Bizzoni but she didn't get all of it and LaPoint came up with the stop again.
Buffalo had their best look of the game in the 79th minute as Ruken found Payton Robertson in the middle of the box but she was unable to convert as her shot sailed wide left.
The Chippewas recorded just four shots in second half but the one they got off in the final minute would prove to be costly as Elizabeth Chlystun got the rebound off a shot by Laila Arab and Chlystun slid the ball past a diving Kelly into the bottom left corner of the net for the game-winner.
On the game, Buffalo outshot Central Michigan 23-8, including a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Kelly made five saves on the afternoon while LaPoint made seven stops for the Chippewas.
"When you are not prepared or up for an opponent this is what happens," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We have to do a better job being ready to compete for 90 minutes. 45 minutes won't cut it in this conference."
Buffalo returns to action on Thursday, October 14 as they host Western Michigan on "Ted Lasso Night" at UB Stadium at 7pm.
