BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team defeated Toledo 2-0 in rainy conditions at Paul Hotmer Field in the conference opener on Friday night. With the win the Bulls improve to 4-3-1 overall and 1-0-0 in MAC play while the Rockets fall to 3-6, 0-1 in league play on the year.
The Bulls struck quickly in the sixth minute as Gurjeena Jandu played a perfect ball on net from 40 yards out that banged off the crossbar and after a scrum in the box, Kara Daly found the loose ball and knocked it into the back of the net to give UB a 1-0 lead.
Buffalo would add to their lead in the 26th minute as Annie Judasz blasted a beautiful strike from long range into the top right corner of the net to put the Bulls up 2-0.
Toledo's offensive came to life in the second half as the Rockets outshot the Bulls 7-3 but Emily Kelly turned in another impressive performance, making four saves on 10 shots faced on the night to preserve the clean sheet and pick up her second shutout victory of the season.
Barberic and Daly led the Bulls with two shots a piece. Adrianna VanCuyck was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches for her lockdown defending and tireless work on the flank.
"So proud of the spirit of this group," head coach Shawn Burke. "With delays, playing conditions and it being the MAC opener these players were ready for whatever came their way. We defeated a good Toledo team tonight and started conference play on the right foot!"
The Bulls return to action on Sunday at Bowling Green as they take on the Falcons at 1pm at Cochrane Stadium.
