BOWLING GREEN, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 contest at Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon at Cochrane Stadium.
With the loss, Buffalo falls to 4-4-1 overall, 1-1 in league play on the season while Bowling Green improves to 4-4-2 overall and 2-0 in conference.
The Falcons struck first in the 11th minute as Maureen Kennedy took the free kick and drilled one off the hands of Emily Kelly into the top of the net to give BG a 1-0 lead.
Offense would be at a premium for much of the first half for the Bulls with UB managing just one shot in the early going but that would change in the 43rd minute as Gurjeena Jandu lined up a free kick and played a perfect ball into the box where Gianna Yurchak got a head on it and flicked it into the top left corner of the net for her first goal of the season to even the score.
Bowling Green would retake the lead in the 48th minute as Nikki Cox got a foot on a loose ball in the box and flicked it past a diving Kelly to put the Falcons up 2-0.
Buffalo would manage just three shots in the second half with their best look coming in the 86th minute as Tess Ford played a strike on net but Kathleen Duwve made a sliding save to preserve the win.
In net, Kelly made seven saves on 12 shots faced while Duwve made two stops for the Falcons. For her efforts, Yurchak was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches.
"We weren't good enough on the day and that will always get exposed against a great team like BG," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We had to defend in long spells and just couldn't maintain or get anything going offensively. We have to be at our best to get a result against the top teams in the MAC and we weren't today."
Buffalo will return to UB Stadium to open a three game homestand, beginning with Miami (OH) on Friday, October 4, at 7pm.
