EUGENE, OR – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team took Oregon to overtime on the road in rainy conditions on Sunday night but a late goal by the hosts at the end of the first extra period gave the Ducks a 2-1 win. With the loss the Bulls fall to 3-3-1 on the year while the Ducks improve to 4-1-3 overall.
After a defensive battle to start, the Bulls would strike first in the 29th minute when Oregon's Croix Soto was whistled for a handball in the box and Marcy Barberic converted her second penalty goal, and third goal overall, of the season to give UB a 1-0 lead.
The Ducks would threaten late in the first half as Zoe Hasenauer made a run up field but Emily Kelly came out of net and made a great save. Less than two minutes later it was Emma Eddy on the breakaway but Kelly stayed aggressive and made another gutsy save to preserve the one goal lead at the half.
Oregon would tie the game in the 63rd minute on a corner kick as Sakura Yoshida played a ball into the box right to the head of Hasenauer who flicked it past a diving Kelly into the upper right hand corner of the net to tie the game 1-1.
Offensive opportunities would be few and far between for the Bulls in the second half. Buffalo got their best look in the 89th minute as Kaitlyn Walsh ripped one off the crossbar in the final seconds but the Ducks defense cleared it away to force overtime.
In the first overtime, Eddy would break through the UB defense and drill one into the back of the net for the game-winner in the 89th minute.
Oregon held the advantage in shots, 25-5, and corners, 6-0. In net, Kelly finished with a career-high 11 saves while Katelyn Carter make two stops for the Ducks. Barberic recorded the lone goal for the Bulls on the night while Katherine Camper led UB with two shots. Senior Carley Zoccali was named Player of the Match by the UB coaches for her phenomenal efforts in the midfield for the Bulls.
"We are disappointed in the outcome but I'm really proud of the group and their effort and buy in to the game plan," said head coach Shawn Burke. "We gave ourselves a chance today to do something special, just came up a bit short."
The Bulls return to action on Friday, September 27, when they travel to Toledo to face the Rockets in the conference opener at 7pm.
