OLEAN, NY – The Buffalo women's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) picked up their first win of the season on Friday afternoon at Big Four, St. Bonaventure (1-2-0, 0-0-0 A10). Despite a late goal by the Bonnies, Katie Roberts provided the game-winning goal for the Bulls in their 2-1 victory.
"I'm proud of our players for coming into a very difficult place to play and getting a win this afternoon," stated head coach Michael Thomas. "We will enjoy this win and get ready for our home opener on Sunday."
Roberts led the Bulls offensively with three shots and the game-winning goal while Sophie Therien picked up her first goal of the season on her only shot of the game. Ainsley Wheldon continued her solid play in the win, making three saves and allowing one goal. The Bonnies held the slim advantage in shots for the game, 14-12.
The game-winning goal for the Bulls was recorded in the 54th minute as Roberts beat the St. Bonaventure goalkeeper to give the Bulls the 2-0 advantage. Roberts was able to beat Christina Saroken for her 11th career goal and first of the season with a perfect shot.
The Bonnies controlled the play early on in the first half but Wheldon stood tall, making two saves. Following St. Bonaventure's fourth shot of the afternoon, Megan Giesen nearly gave the Bulls their first goal, but her hard shot caromed off the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
A few minutes later, Therien provided the Bulls with their first goal of the season as she buried the ball behind Megan Junker, 27 minutes into play.
Following the Therien tally, the two teams went back and forth for the final 18 minutes of the half as Wheldon closed the half with a big save off the foot of Jordan Calabria with just under 30 seconds to play. Despite holding the 9-3 advantage in shots after the opening 45 minutes of play, the Bonnies trailed the Bulls 1-0.
The Bulls put a flurry of shots towards the Bonnies goal in the 50th minute but efforts by Karen McMahon and Roberts were denied by the defense.
The Bonnies were able to break through with their lone goal of the contest in the 85th minute of action as Lauren Hill beat Wheldon for her first goal of the season. Brittany Charles picked up the assist on the Bonnies tally.
The Bulls defense helped run out the final five minutes of the half to capture their first victory of the season.
Hill led the Bonnies offensively with her first tally of the season on her only shot of the afternoon. Caitlin MacConnell led the team with three shots while Megan Junker and Christina Sarokon each allowed a goal in 45 minutes of action.
The Bulls will return to the field on Sunday, September 1 at 12 pm for their home opener against the Youngstown State Penguins at UB Stadium.
