AMHERST, NY – The Buffalo women's soccer team (2-1-0, 0-0-0 MAC) picked up a dominating 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon in their 2013 home opener. Megan Abman picked up the game-winning goal for the Bulls in the 71st minute of action to extend their winning streak to two.
"I was very proud of our patience and commitment to details this afternoon against a very good opponent," stated head coach Michael Thomas.
Abman picked up the lone goal for the Bulls as she entered the game off the bench, scoring on her only shot of the contest. Junior Katie Roberts led Buffalo offensively as she fired six shots towards the opponents net while Sophie Therien recorded three shots on goal in the victory. Ainsley Wheldon made the most of her chance to shine, recorded four saves in her 16th career shutout. Wheldon ranks second all-time in UB history in shutouts and is five behind Jaime Adams for the school record.
With the score knotted at zero in the 71st minute of play, Abman found a loose ball to the left of the Youngstown State net and buried the ball in the lower left corner of the net for the eventual game-winning marker. Kristin Markiewicz picked up her first assist of the season after a perfectly placed side throw in that was flicked right to the foot of Abman, who beat the goalkeeper with a perfectly placed shot.
"The credit for my goal should go to my teammates for the perfect execution of the play," said Abman. "I got the flick and I was able to find the back of the net after the hard work from my teammates."
The two teams started off the game going back and forth through the opening 15 minutes of the contest. The biggest save of the opening half came in the 13th minute as Wheldon made a huge diving stop on a shot by Taylor Ross. The Ross shot was head for the top right corner of the Buffalo goal but Wheldon was able to stretch out and keep the game scoreless.
Later in the half, Wheldon was relied on to make another diving stop, this time off the foot of Chelsey Haney. Wheldon smothered the ball and allowed the Bulls to head to the locker room tied 0-0. The Bulls held the slight 7-4 advantage in shots in the opening half.
The first 15 minutes of the second half were an even affair as both teams fired four shots on the opposing goal. Finally in the 71st minute Abman broke the scoreless game with her first goal of the season off the bench for the Bulls.
Roberts nearly gave the Bulls the commanding 2-0 lead minutes after the Abman tally but her effort went just wide. The Bulls defense stood tall down the final 19 minutes of the game, as they did not allow the pressing Penguins attack to record one shot on Wheldon.
Natalie Jurisevic, Markiewicz and Courtney Gross had a great afternoon for the Bulls as they only allowed the Penguins to fire four shots on goal in their first shutout victory of the season.
Katie Hohmann and Chelsey Haney each recorded four shots in the losing effort for the Penguins. Jackie Podolsky played well between the pipes, making a game-high six saves.
The Bulls will have nine days off as they will not play again until September 10 when they welcome Cornell to UB Stadium. First kick is set for 7:00 pm.
