TOLEDO, OH – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team finally managed to break their scoreless streak of two games on Friday afternoon in their first road conference contest of the season at Toledo. The Bulls scored three goals for the first time all year in their 3-1 victory over the Rockets.
"I was proud with how we handled the little details of the game today" stated Michael Thomas. "We defended set pieces, made adjustments and did the little things that you need to do to win on the road."
The Bulls dominated the opening 15 minutes of the half before finally sneaking one past the Toledo goalkeeper. After recording the opening three shots of the contest, Megan Giesen was able to find the back of the net in the 15th minute, giving Buffalo the early 1-0 lead. Karen McMahon, her first assist on the year, assisted Giesen's first marker of the season.
The Buffalo lead was extended to 2-0 just over seven minutes later as McMahon broke free and scored her second goal of the season, both game-winning tallies. The goal and assist for McMahon marks the first UB player all year to record a multi-point game.
"Karen McMahon was dangerous all game long and had a part in all three goals for us today," said Thomas. "She had a really complete effort for us in this win."
The Bulls were in total control after 45 minutes of action, holding the 7-4 advantage in shots, the Rockets were not able to put a shot on goal through the first half of action.
Angel Hart gave the Bulls the commanding 3-0 lead in the 69th minute as she found the back of the net for the first time in her young career.
With the game well in hand, the Bulls allowed the Rockets to get on the board in the 87th minute as Meghan Topolewski scored on her penalty kick opportunity, her first goal of the season.
The Bulls defense preserved the first conference win of the season behind 90 minutes of action from Kristin Markiewicz, Natalie Jurisevic, Sophie Therien and captain Courtney Gross. Ainsley Wheldon came up with three saves in her fourth win of the season.
The Bulls will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon at noon, as they will travel to take on Northern Illinois in a conference showdown.
