BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team (4-6-2, 1-4-0 MAC) was defeated by the score of 1-0 by the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes at UB Stadium on Friday night. Kent State scored just three minutes into action and held on the rest of the way for the road conference victory.
"If you look at the collective play, I think anyone who watched the game would think we played well but it came down to individual battles," stated head coach Michael Thomas. "With all the shots we had, we weren't able to get a goal and that was the difference in the game."
The Bulls completely dominated the second half as they recorded 11 shots for a game total of 16 while the Golden Flashes were limited to two attempts in the second half and 12 for the game. The Bulls had the slight 4-2 advantage in corner kicks while both goalkeepers, Ainsley Wheldon and Stephanie Senn, recorded eight saves.
The Bulls had two great chances to get on the board early on in the contest as Celina Carrero ripped a shot that was saved by the diving goalkeeper and Karen McMahon's shot at the open net was blocked away by a Kent State defender.
On the ensuing rush for the Golden Flashes, leading scorer Jessacca Gironda found herself wide open in front of the keeper and she buried the shot just inside the right goal post to give Kent State the 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game.
With the score still 1-0 in favor of the visitors; Wheldon came up with her biggest save of the game to keep the Bulls in striking range. In the 75th minute, Morgan Mah had her free kick opportunity saved by a diving Wheldon.
Trailing late in the contest, the Bulls offense began to push and create chances to score. In the 81st minute, Katie Roberts had her free kick chance stopped by the outstretched arms of Senn. The Bulls final opportunity to score came with six minute to play in the contest as McMahon's blast was stopped from five yards out, preserving the win for the Golden Flashes.
McMahon led all Bull players with six shots including three shots on goal while Carrero recorded three shots in her first career start for Buffalo. Coming off the bench, Roberts finished with three shots while Wheldon finished with eight big saves in the defeat.
The Bulls return to UB Stadium on Sunday, October 13 as they play host to conference foe, Ohio, for a 12 pm game.
