BUFFALO, NY – Despite outshooting the Ohio Bobcats 23-12 for the game, the Buffalo women's soccer team (4-7-2, 1-5-0 MAC) was unable to score for their second-straight game as they were defeated at home, 1-0.
"I thought we had a lot of great chances to score this afternoon but we didn't finish," stated sixth-year head coach Michael Thomas. "Defensively we limited their good opportunities but our one lapse in defense cost us this conference game with a good team."
Buffalo dominated the second half of the game as they recorded 16 shots to the Bobcats seven. Despite the large margin in shots, the Bobcats scored the lone goal of the game just over a minute into the second half. Carly Manso crossed the ball into the box from the left of goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon, and Liz Finley buried the ball in the back of the net from five yards out.
Celina Carrero, making her second career start for the Bulls, almost gave the Bulls the early lead as she was robbed from right in front of the goal in the 17th minute by a challenging Mattie Liston. Just over 21 minutes later Buffalo received a great shot attempt from Karen McMahon but Liston was there for another big save.
Following a diving stop on Carrero, the Bobcats came down and recorded the lone goal of the contest.
In the 56th minute, Courtney Mann had a chance to tie the game but her blast from 20 yards out sailed just high over the cross bar. Later in the half, the Bulls had their final good shot attempt of the contest as Sophie Therien put a perfect service into the box but a header attempt by Katie Roberts went just wide of the goal.
Carrero led the Bulls with five shots including two on goal while McMahon and Megan Giesen each had four shots. Wheldon finished off her game with four saves on five shots on goal.
The Bulls will return home next weekend for a pair of games against Bowling Green and Central Michigan on Friday and Sunday respectively.
