Bulls Earn Win Over UNLV in the Opening Weekend of 2025

LAS VEGAS – The University at Buffalo softball team (1-4, 0-0 MAC) picked up their first win of the season this weekend with a 6-0 decision over host UNLV late Saturday evening.
On the weekend, the Bulls went 1-4 against tough programs in Southern Utah, UNLV and nationally ranked Oregon. The Bulls' offense was led by Lily Lauck and freshman Emily Gorman. Lauck went 5-for-10 with 6 RBIs, a run scored, 4 walks and a hit by pitch. She led the team with a .667 on base percentage. Gorman hit .438 on the weekend going 7-for-16 at the dish with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs, 2 walks and 3 stolen bases on 3 attempts. Alyssa Wasielewski and Mia Mitchell also had 5 hits apiece at the UNLV Desert Classic.
GAME 3 VS. SOUTHERN UTAH
The Bulls gave the Southern Utah Thunderbirds a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double to left. Buffalo answered in the bottom half of the inning. Emily Gorman led the inning off with a double to left. Mia Mitchell then walked to put runners on first and second. Abbey Nagel hit into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Nagel then stole second base to give the Bulls two runners in scoring position. Lily Lauck ripped a single up the middle to score Gorman and put runners on the corners. Isabella Smithson grounded out to second base to score Nagel to put Buffalo in front, 2-1.
Southern Utah took advantage of a bases loaded opportunity in the second inning. An RBI single tied the game which was followed up by an SAC fly to left field to put the Thunderbirds ahead, 3-2. Buffalo had no response as they went down in order.
The Bulls tied the game in the third with Lauck hitting an RBI single up the middle after Mitchell hit a double to right. Southern Utah retook the lead in the top of the fourth on an RBI single to center. The Thunderbirds added to their lead with an RBI sacrifice fly to center to take a 5-3 lead. Buffalo cut into the lead as Mitchell hit a sacrifice fly to left as Alyssa Wasielewski scored to make it a 5-4 Southern Utah lead.
Buffalo took a 6-5 lead after a Smithson two-run home run that scored Talynn Williams. The lead didn't last long as the Thunderbirds scored 4 runs on 3 hits and 1 error to take a 9-6 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Mitchell hit a solo home run to left to cut into Southern Utah's lead.
In the top of the seventh, Southern Utah got an insurance run on an RBI double to take a 10-7 lead. The Bulls had no answers as they went down in order.
GAME 4 AT UNLV
The Bulls picked up their first win of the season against the UNLV Rebels late Saturday night, 6-0. This was Buffalo's first win over the Rebels in their four meetings.
The Bulls got on the board early as Lily Lauck continued to have timely hits. She hit an RBI single to center to score Gorman in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Bulls got out of a jam with runners on second and third to keep the lead.
Buffalo kept the foot on the gas as Reagan Terwilliger and Ava Thelen reached base with Gorman up to the plate. Gorman drilled a double to left center to score both runners and force a pitching change. After a ground out, Nagel then grounded out to second base, but Gorman came around to score to give the Bulls a 4-0 lead.
The game stayed at 4-0 until the top of the seventh when the Bulls added a pair of insurance runs as Thelen doubled to left scoring Wasielewski and Ta. Williams. Up 6-0, the Bulls took care of business in the bottom of the seventh as the Rebels went down in order.
Freshman Emily Gorman went 3-for-5 with a double, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Lauck went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Oliva Russ threw her first complete game shutout with 4 strikeouts, 1 walk and 4 hits allowed.
GAME 5 VS. NO. 23 OREGON
The Ducks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a single down the left field line. The Bulls responded in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Ardyn Hopf to score Lauck. In the bottom half of the inning, Oregon retook the lead on an RBI single to make it 2-1.
The Ducks didn't surrender the lead the rest of the way as they scored a combined 6 runs in the third and fifth innings.
No. 23 Oregon came away with the 8-1 win to close out the Bulls' action at the UNLV Desert Classic.
The Bulls are back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 at the James Madison Invitational. They'll tart the tournament against Saint Francis at 11 a.m. followed by James Madison at 1:30 p.m.
