TOLEDO, Ohio – The University at Buffalo softball team (24-29, 10-14 MAC) split their Saturday doubleheader at Toledo (14-33, 10-14 MAC). Buffalo won the first contest, 9-5, before falling in the series finale, 3-2.
GAME 1
It didn't take long for Buffalo's offense to lift off on Saturday afternoon. Emily Gorman reached base on an error followed by a Reagan Terwilliger walk. Nicole Allen loaded the bases with an infield single. Bella Smithson then ripped a 2-RBI single up the middle for the early 2-0. Abbey Nagel then hit an RBI single to left to give Buffalo a 3-0 lead. Delaney Ellis singled to shortstop allowing pinch runner Sophia Avin to score. Tabitha von Kolen loaded the bases with a walk and forced a pitching change leading 4-0. Gorman forced in a run on walk as Terwilliger then beat out an infield single to go up 6-0.
Toledo got a run back in the bottom of the second with a sac fly to left to make it 6-1.
The Bulls added to their lead in the top of the fifth. Terwilliger hit a sac fly to left that scored Ellis to make it 7-1. Bri Delaney's bat stayed hot as she smoked a2-RBI double off the left center wall that scored Allen and von Kolen.
Leading 9-1 and looking for the mercy in the fifth, the Rockets had other plans as they scored three runs to force the fifth inning.
Leading 9-4, Buffalo's offense stalled out, but they managed to hold off any comeback by the Rockets. Buffalo took home the 9-5 win to win the series.
Genevieve Longsdorf tossed 6.1 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits. Delaney led the Bulls with two hits and a pair of RBIs. Terwilliger and Smithson also finished with two RBIs.
GAME 2
It was a scoreless affair until the Bulls broke through in the fourth inning. With Bri Delaney on first following a walk, Bella Smithson ripped a two-run blast to left, her 12th homer of the season.
The Rockets tied the contest in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run blast of their own. In the bottom of the sixth, Toledo took their first lead of the series with a sac fly to right to lead 3-2.
The Bulls went down in order in the seventh as Toledo avoided the sweep.
Olivia Russ went the distance in the loss.
The Bulls will close the regular season with a three-game series against the Ball State Cardinals beginning Friday at Nan Harvey Field.
