ATHENS, Ga. – The University at Buffalo softball team (1-5, 0-0 MAC) opened the 22nd Annual Georgia Classic against the No. 9 Georgia Bulldogs on Thursday afternoon. The Bulldogs took the home contest, 11-3.
The Bulls managed to get two runners on base in the first inning off a Mia Mitchell single and Abbey Nagel walk, but they failed to convert. The Bulldogs scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
Isabella Smithson started the second inning off with a single up the middle. That was all the Bulls could muster in the inning. Georgia added to their lead with an RBI ground out to second.
The Bulldogs made it a 9-0 game in the fourth inning on a 3-run home run.
In the fifth inning, the Bulls got on the board. With the bases loaded, Nagel struck out swinging, but Reagan Terwilliger scored on the pass ball as Emily Gorman and Mitchell advanced. Lily Lauck walked to load the bases again to bring up Alyssa Wasielewski. She hot a hard ground ball to shortstop that caused a bobble and a bad throw to first scoring both Gorman and Mitchell. Headed to the bottom of the fifth inning, the Bulldogs led, 9-3. With runners in scoring position, Georgia hit a double to left center to score both runners and take the game in an 11-3 decision.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. against the Syracuse Orange.
