TOLEDO, Ohio – The University at Buffalo softball team (23-28, 9-13 MAC) was victorious in their Friday matinee against the Toledo Rockets (13-32, 9-13 MAC), 9-2.
Junior pitcher Olivia Russ tossed yet another complete game in consecutive starts, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Bri Delaney led the Bulls from the plate with 7 RBIs including a 2-run homer and a grand slam. Buffalo's season total is now five grand slams. With her performance, Delaney now holds the program single season record for RBIs with 55 passing Katie Weimer's 2016 record of 49. Nicole Allen also set the single season program record for hits in a single season with 73. She broke Alexis Curtis' 2015 record.
Scoring started from the beginning with Emily Gorman's lead-off walk. After a pair of outs, Delaney drove a deep fly ball to left for a 2-run home run, her sixth of the season. The Rockets answered in the bottom of the second with a 2-run blast of their own.
Tied at 2 in the top of the third, Delaney ripped a sac fly to center that scored Reagan Terwilliger giving Buffalo a 3-2 lead.
After a three up, three down inning with Toledo at the bat, the Bulls' offense lifted off in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Gorman smoked a single up the middle to score Delaney Ellis and Ava Thelen. Now leading 5-2, Nicole Allen was hit by a pitch to load the bases back up. Delaney then smashed a grand slam to left to give the Bulls a 9-2 lead.
That was all the offense in the game as the Bulls took their first road victory at Scott Park in Toledo since the 2022 season.
Abbey Nagel along with Delaney recorded a pair of hits on the day. Gorman finished with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored.
The Bulls are back in action tomorrow as they'll wrap up their series against Toledo with a doubleheader. First pitch is at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
