KALAMAZOO, MI – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team fell to Western Michigan 5-0 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament finals on Sunday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The Broncos had the first scoring opportunity of the day in the ninth minute as Ava Beckett drilled a shot from deep, but MAC Goalkeeper of the Year Lexie Thompson made a fantastic leaping save to punch the ball out of play.
Buffalo then went on the offensive in the 23rd minute as Kaylin Ricci took a free kick and put a good strike on it but the WMU defense knocked it away, and then on the ensuing free kick, Ellie Simmons played a great ball to the back post where Kaya Schultz charged in and one-timed a shot that sailed high and over the crossbar.
Later, in the 30th minute, Carolyn Hinkle slid a ball through into the box and Ashley Reyes ripped a shot on target, but Lauren Boafo made a good save and Sarah Woods was there for the rebound but her shot attempt missed wide left.
The Broncos broke through in the 38th minute as they drew a foul just outside the box and Abby Werthman delivered a strike past a leaping Thompson into the top left corner of the net to give WMU a 1-0 lead at the half.
It was all Western Michigan in the second half as they exploded for four goals to secure the championship.
Buffalo had three players named to the All-Tournament team: Kaylin Ricci, Kaya Schultz and Frederique St.-Jean.
The Bulls end the 2024 season with a 11-2-7 overall record. Playing their final game for the Bulls were Ricci, Schultz, Olivia Bizzoni, Arianna Zumpano, Moa Andersson, Rebecca Winslow, Kelly Severini and Ashleigh Fortunate.
