Bulls Open MAC Play This Weekend

BUFFALO, NY – After a strong non-conference showing, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team (3-1-3) opens Mid-American Conference play with a pair of games this week. The Bulls travel to state of Ohio for a clash with the Akron Zips on Thursday night before welcoming the Ohio Bobcats to UB Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Thursday's game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Chad Welker announcing. Sunday's action will be broadcasted on YouTube with Jack Kreuzer on the call.
It will be the 24th meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Bulls holding an 12-8-3 series advantage. UB defeated Akron 3-0 at UB Stadium last season.
On Sunday it will be the 28th meeting between Buffalo and Ohio with the Bulls holding a narrow 14-12-1 series edge. The Bulls have won five of the last seven meetings with the Bobcats, most recently a 3-0 win in Athens a year ago.
The Bulls ended non-conference play on a six-game unbeaten streak, most recently playing to a 1-1 draw at UConn on Saturday. Fifth year midfielder Leah Wengender scored the game-tying goal in the 60th minute off the assist from Katie Krohn.
Krohn leads the Bulls with four goals and an assist over the opening seven games of play. She is second in the MAC in total goals (4), goals per game (0.57), points (10) and points per game (1.43) while also ranking in the top 10 in total shots (18) and shots per game (2.57). Wengender has three goals while Arianna Zumpano has also recorded a goal. Freshman Lexie Thompson has led the Bulls between the pipes, compiling a 3-1-2 overall record. She ranks second in the league with a .83 goals against average, fifth in save percentage (.762) and ranks in the top 10 in total saves (16).
Akron enters Thursday's match with a 2-5 overall record after defeating Niagara 1-0 last week. The Zips are balanced offensively as three players have recorded a pair of goals on the year. Sara Bower and Penelope have split time between the pipes for Akron, combining for 29 saves, a .674 save percentage and a 2.0 goals against average over seven games.
Ohio enters league play with a 2-3-2 overall record after dropping road contests at Ohio State and James Madison last week. Senior midfielder Izzi Boyd and sophomore forward Scout Murray lead the Bobcats offensively with two goals each while Ella Deevers and Shae Robertson have added one goal apiece. In net, Ohio is led by sophomore Celeste Sloma who has made 28 saves and owns a 0.800 save percentage and a 1.00 goals against average in seven starts.
Following weekend play, the Bulls will continue league action on Thursday, September 28 as they welcome Miami (OH) to UB Stadium for a 6pm contest.
