BUFFALO, NY – The University at Buffalo women's soccer team fought hard, but the late comeback wasn't enough as the Bulls fell to No. 14 Pitt 2-1 in the season opener at UB Stadium on Thursday night.
Offense was at a premium in the early going before Pitt had their first scoring chance in the 12th minute as Samiah Phiri banged one off the post. Later in the 21st minute, off a Panther corner Ashton Gordon got her head on a ball and flicked it wide right.
Buffalo had their first look of the game in the 39th minute as they took a corner and Moa Andersson got off a shot, but the Panther defense knocked the ball out of play and the game remained scoreless at the half.
The Bulls dominated possession out of the break and were rewarded with scoring chances as Ellie Simmons took a corner and got her own rebound and fired on net, but Ellie Breech made the save. Later in the 57th minute, Katie Krohn took a free kick and then Arianna Zumpano followed with rebound shot, but both were blocked by the Pitt defense.
The Panthers regained possession off a UB turnover and capitalized in the 66th minute as Ashley Moon found Amanda West who fired a shot into the bottom corner of the net to give Pitt a 1-0 lead.
Pitt would add to their lead in the 70th minute as Phiri played a great ball to Landy Mertz who blasted a shot into the back of the net to put the Panthers up 2-0.
The Bulls showed no quit as they continued to make runs and create scoring chances and they finally broke though in the 86th minute as Krohn beat her defender off the ball and made a great run before drilling a shot past Breech to cut the lead to one but that would be as close as they would get as UB was unable to convert the equalizer over the final minutes of play.
Fifth year defender Emily Lazenby was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her solid defensive efforts.
"Really proud of the character that our group showed tonight," said head coach Shawn Burke. "Going down 2-0, having to defend for really long spells, and then to switch mentality and go attack this game it took so much effort and I know they were tired, but they showed their character and there is a lot upon which we can build."
The Bulls return to action on Sunday, August 20 as they take on their second straight Power 5 opponent, the Ohio State Buckeyes. Kickoff from Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium is set for 12pm.
