COLUMBUS, Ohio – Junior forward Arianna Zumpano found the back of the net in the 84th minute for the go-ahead goal to power the Bulls to a statement win at Ohio State on Sunday afternoon.
It is the first road Power 5 win in program history and the first Power 5 victory for UB since 2015 when the Bulls defeated Syracuse 1-0 at UB Stadium.
After a slow start to the game with no shots recorded over the opening 25 minutes of play Ohio State got on the board in the 26th minute as Kailyn Dudukovich scored to put the hosts on top 1-0.
The Bulls showed no signs of panic and immediately went on the attack just a minute later as Marissa Foster played a great ball through to Hermann Trophy watchlist selection Leah Wengender who drilled a shot into the back of the net for her first goal of the season to tie the game at one.
Buffalo continued to attack as Zumpano and Laiken Kiser recorded a pair of shots in the 29th and 36th minutes that sailed off target and then Marissa Foster had a great look late in the half in the 42nd minute as she ripped at the crossbar, but Molly Pritchard made the save and the game remained tied at the half.
UB freshman goalie Lexie Thompson was tested early in the second half as the Buckeyes had a scoring chance in the 48th minute but the freshman came up with a big stop.
It was a defensive battle for much of the second half with the two teams managing only a handful of shots, mostly off target. Olivia Bizzoni tested Pritchard once again in the 73rd minute and fired a shot on goal but she came up with the stop.
Bizzoni continued to stay aggressive, and it paid off in the 84th minute as she found Zumpano who delivered the game-winner in the 84th minute and that would be all they would need to secure the victory over the final minutes of play.
Thompson picked up her first career victory, making three saves on the afternoon. Junior Kaylin Ricci was named Player of the Game by the UB coaches for her efforts in the win.
"This is a massive win for our program," said head coach Shawn Burke. "All the credit to the players who bought in and have come together as a team in such a short time. We opened the season against two amazing programs and perennial NCAA Tournament participants, and I think we showed what our program is capable of."
Up next, the Bulls travel to Hamilton, NY to take on the Colgate Raiders on Thursday, August 24 at 4:30pm.
