ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University at Buffalo softball team split a pair of games at the Lobo Classic on Friday. The Bulls defeated Tarleton State 4-3 in extra innings in the first game of the day, before falling to North Dakota State 6-3 in game two.
It was a pitcher's duel in the early going as the teams combined for just four hits through three innings of play. The Bulls got on the board in the top of the fourth as Alexis Lucyshyn singled up the middle and Anna Aguon followed with a two-run blast down the right field line to give the Bulls a 2-0 lead.
The Texans threatened with runners on second and third in the bottom of the inning, but Lucyshyn recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and escape the jam. Tarleton put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh as they recorded three straight hits, capped by an RBI double, to tie the game at two and force extra innings.
The Bulls scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth as Rachel Steffan singled to left center field to score Alexis Matheney and Lucyshyn recorded a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
Lucyshyn picked up her second win of the season as she struck out a career-high 10 batters while allowing just one walk in a complete game effort.
In game two, Buffalo struck first as Brianna Castro doubled to left, Olivia Kincanon followed with a single up the middle and Castro would later score on a wild pitch to give the Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
North Dakota State broke through in the top of the third as they scored two runs on four hits to take a 2-1 lead and they added two more in the fourth to go up 4-1.
The Bulls chipped away in the bottom of the fourth as Lucyshyn singled through the left side and later, Kincanon drilled a two-run home run to straightaway center field to pull UB within one.
The Bison extended their lead to 5-3 on a solo home run in the top of the fifth but freshman Marissa Calloway and the UB defense got a pair of big outs to limit the damage. NDSU added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and was all they needed as the Bulls were retired in order in their final at bats.
Buffalo will conclude play at the Lobo Classic on Sunday with a doubleheader, beginning with a game against UTEP at 5pm EST and followed by a game against the hosts, New Mexico, at 7:30pm.
