BUFFALO, NY – After cracking the Top 10 in the Midwest Region of the United Soccer Coaches weekly rankings, the University at Buffalo women's soccer team continues MAC play this week with a pair of games as the Bulls will travel to Akron for a clash with the Zips on Thursday night before returning home to host the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday afternoon.
On Thursday it will be the 20th all-time meeting between Buffalo and Akron with the Zips holding the narrow 9-8-2 series edge. The Bulls defeated the Zips 2-1 in a double overtime thriller in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament at UB Stadium in 2019.
On Sunday, Buffalo and Ohio will meet for the 24th time with the series tied 11-11-1 overall. The Bulls have won three of the last four meetings with the Bobcats, most recently a 2-0 win in Athens last season.
Winners of two straight, Buffalo (2-1) will look to continue their momentum after defeating defending conference champion Bowling Green 2-1 on Sunday. It was the first win for UB over the Falcons since 2016. After trailing 1-0 early on the Bulls got aggressive at the end of the first half as Marcy Barberic scored on a feed from Leah Wengender to tie the game 1-1 in the 36th minute. Buffalo continued to attack to start the second half as Gianna Yurchak found Barberic who knocked home her second goal of the day to give the Bulls a 2-1 lead as the UB defense limited the Falcons to just one shot the rest of the game to secure the victory.
Akron enters Thursday's match with a 0-3 overall record after falling 3-0 at Ohio on Sunday. The Zips are led by Bailee Bowers who has taken four shots in three games. In net, Akron has relied on Vanessa Berlin who has made 12 saves on the year.
Ohio enters the weekend with a 1-2 overall record after defeating Akron 3-0 on Sunday. Izzi Boyd, Shae Robertson and Abby Townsend have all scored one goal each for the Bobcats, while Townsend and Robertson lead Ohio with eight and seven shots, respectively. Senior Sydney Malham has led the Bobcats between the pipes, compiling a 1-2 record with a 0.66 goals against average and 12 saves in three starts.
Following the weekend, the Bulls will have a week off before hosting Miami (OH) at UB Stadium on Sunday, March 28th. Kickoff is set for 12pm.
