VESTAL, NY – The University at Buffalo men's tennis team defeated Binghamton, 5-2, in their Mid-American Conference opener on the road on Saturday. The Bulls improved to 3-1 overall with the win.
Binghamton won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. However, singles play was dominated by the Bulls.
Bjoern Peterson was victorious at first singles, with a straight set win over Michael Pawlowicz, 6-4, 6-2.
Matthew Johnson also cruised at second singles with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Dan Pergel.
Finn Macnamara was also a straight-set winner, taking down Joshua Kim, 6-3, 6-1 at fourth singles.
Similar results at fifth singles, as Simon Wibler had an easy time with Diego Ramos, 6-1, 6-3.
Finally, Greg Hastings rallied to beat Adi Ben Ari. Hastings dropped the first set, 6-4, before winning set two, 7-6 (1) and set three 10-4.
"Today was a test of our grit after a slow start and losing the doubles point to begin conference play," assistant coach Tony Miller said. "Binghamton came out energized from the first point and took it to us. We were impressed with how our guys responded and started in singles. From the start, they were able to jump out to early leads and keep their foot on the gas. The energy they brought in singles as a whole group, especially in another teams facility was exceptional and every single guy was locked in until the last point of the last match was played. We would like to thank the whole sports medicine department at UB for continuing to do an amazing job keeping everyone safe and ready to compete. We also would like to thank Binghamton for doing a great job providing a safe playing environment for all of the student athletes!"
The Bulls will return to action on Friday at Northern Illinois.
